Engineered Tap Plans for New Construction & Renovation Projects

Need a City of Austin water and wastewater tap plan?

We provide professional engineering services for residential and development projects requiring Austin Water tap plan review and approval.

With our dedicated team and extensive experience navigating Austin's utility and permitting environment, we understand the details local reviewers expect and prepare plans with those requirements in mind from the start.

Our goal is to help clients move efficiently through the City of Austin review process by submitting complete, well-prepared plans that meet local expectations from the start.

Local permitting knowledge matters.

What Is a City of Austin Tap Plan?

An engineered tap plan shows how the property's proposed water and wastewater services will connect to Austin Water's existing infrastructure.

The plan typically identifies the proposed service connections, routing, sizes, applicable details, existing utilities, and other information required for Austin Water review.

When Austin Water determines that new water or wastewater service connections are required, an engineered tap plan must be prepared and submitted for review before those connections can be installed.

When Might You Need a Tap Plan?

A tap plan may be required when a project involves new or modified water and wastewater service connections, including projects such as:

  • New home construction
  • Demolition and redevelopment of an existing property
  • Major home additions (ADU's) or renovations
  • Duplex and small residential development
  • Replacement or relocation of existing utility services
  • Other projects where Austin Water determines new service connections are required

Not every project requires a new tap plan. Existing services may sometimes be eligible to remain depending on the project and existing conditions.

Not sure if your project needs one? Send us the property address and project information and we can help you determine the next step.

Our Process

1. Send Us Your Project

Provide the property address, available plans, and a brief description of the proposed construction or renovation.

2. We Review the Requirements

We review the available project information and determine what is needed to prepare the tap plan.

3. We Prepare & Submit the Tap Plan

The water and wastewater service design is prepared in accordance with applicable City of Austin and Austin Water requirements and submitted for review.

4. We Work Through City Review

If Austin Water provides review comments, we address the applicable comments and revise the plans as necessary to help move the project toward approval.

5. We Deliver Your Approved Tap Plan

Once the review process is complete, we provide you with the final approved tap plan package and applicable documentation needed to move forward with your project.

Our goal is to make the process straightforward and minimize unnecessary back-and-forth with the City.

Why Austin Permitting Experience Matters

Austin's utility permitting process is unique.

Knowing how to design water and wastewater services is important—but understanding how Austin Water expects those designs to be presented can be just as important.

Our experience working within Austin's utility and permitting environment provides a practical understanding of local review expectations, approval processes, and project requirements that can significantly affect schedules and costs.

That experience helps us identify potential issues earlier, minimize unnecessary review cycles, and keep projects moving forward.
